Over the years I have worked with many varieties of woods. Some wood is easier to work with but I usually try to turn most any wood that has color and pattern. Most of my shapes now include finials that incorporate natural, found and even antique objects in them. Many of my tops will also include turned "spikes" that embellish the piece.
